How to Use the Jewellery Comparison Calculator

  1. Enter weights & metal — Input the gross weight of the piece and choose the metal type (22kt gold, 18kt gold, 24kt gold, 14kt gold, or silver). The gold rate is auto-fetched from live market data.
  2. Add stones (optional) — Enable the Stones section to add diamond or gemstone details. Enter weight in carats, rattis, or grams and set the rate per unit. Apply per-stone discounts if any.
  3. Configure labour charges — Choose a labour mode: percentage of gold value, rupees per gram, or flat amount. Add a labour discount if offered by the jeweller.
  4. Add polish & misc charges — Enable polish to account for finishing gold loss. Add any miscellaneous charges or an overall percentage discount on the total.
  5. Save and repeat — Click "Save Calculation for comparison" to lock in the first estimate. Adjust parameters for the next jeweller / design and save again.
  6. View & export — Click "Show Comparison" for the side-by-side table. Differences are highlighted in bold green. Export to PDF with one click.

Understanding Jewellery Pricing in India

Jewellery pricing in India is based on the prevailing gold market rate (quoted per 10 grams on MCX / IBJA), adjusted for metal purity, plus separate charges for craftsmanship and embedded stones.

Gold Purity & Pricing

22kt gold (91.6% pure) is the most common for traditional Indian jewellery. 18kt gold (75% pure) is popular for lightweight and diamond jewellery. 24kt gold (99.9% pure) is used for coins and bars but rarely for ornaments. The gold weight in a piece is calculated as: Gross Weight − Stone Weight = Net Gold Weight.

Making / Labour Charges

Making charges vary widely between jewellers — from 6% to over 25% of gold value, depending on design intricacy, brand premium, and local market practices. Comparing making charges for the same piece across multiple jewellers is one of the biggest savings opportunities for jewellery buyers in India.

Stone Valuation

Diamond weight is quoted in carats (1 ct = 0.2 gm). Coloured gemstones like rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are often quoted in rattis in India (1 rt ≈ 0.12 gm). Prices range from a few hundred rupees per carat for semi-precious stones to lakhs per carat for premium diamonds.

GST on Jewellery

The Goods and Services Tax on gold jewellery in India is 3% on the total invoice value (metal + making charges + stone value). Always verify whether a jeweller's quoted price is exclusive or inclusive of GST before comparing.
